Monday night, the Cougars met up with the Woodland Park Panthers for their second game of the season. Prior to the puck drop captains Andrew Burton and Ian Wark, as well as senior goalie Chris Kelly were honored at their last home game. The three seniors have played together since they were first year Squirts in the Junior Tigers. All three have played at Coronado since their freshman year.
The first period was dominated by the Cougars. Cole Brooker got the Cougars started with an even strength goal on an assist by Trevor Gordon and Logan Dineen. Less than a minute later, Ian Wark caught a pass from Andrew Burton, scoring his first goal. Logan Dineen scored next with the help of Cole Brooker and goalie (yes, goalie) Chris Kelly.
James Costello put the Panther’s on the board with their first goal. However the excitement was short lived as, defenseman, Trevor Gordon, scored a power play goal with the assist going to Cole Brooker. Just as the Panthers were coming out to the box, Brooker set up Logan Dineen for his second goal of the period. Seconds later, Dineen returned the favor with a pass to Brooker. Just like old times, Andrew Burton set Ian Wark up with the last goal of the period, leading their team off of the ice with a 7-1 lead and a running clock.
In the second and third periods, the seniors passed the puck to the next generation. In the second period, freshman Aiden Heinz scored his second goal of the season with the help of seniors Ian Wark and Andrew Burton. The Panthers tried to claw back into the game in the third period with a goal by Colton Ivory. However, Cole Brooker had other ideas. Brooker scored his hat trick with the help of the defense, Austin Crawford and Trevor Gordon. The game ended with a penalty shot by the Panthers Lou Levy. The final score was 9-3, Coronado.
